Welcome to South Africa’s first Provincial AI Cluster Project

The Western Cape AI Cluster

What is Western Cape AI Cluster?

In March 2026 the South African AI Association (SAAIA) & the Western Cape Government (WCG) launched the Western Cape AI Cluster (WCAIC).

WCAIC is a 3-year collaborative, multi-stakeholder programme to place the Western Cape as a globally significant AI Tech Hub and gateway to AI Africa.

WCAIC will research, support and grow the artificial intelligence opportunity in the province by engaging relevant stakeholders on key themes such as AI Policy, Responsible AI, Governance, Infrastructure, AI Factories and Sovereign AI.

WCAIC - Vision

Build an AI Ecosystem that impacts everyone

Forming part of the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) Technology Ecosystem Enablement Programme, the WCAIC Project seeks to strengthen the province’s AI innovation ecosystem by supporting intermediaries and ecosystem enablers who play a pivotal role in advancing the AI technology sector.  It will run for a period of three years and create an impactful and sustainable AI ecosystem for everyone and a blueprint other provinces can leverage.

WCAIC - Mission

Ensure AI is a positive opportunity for ALL

Make the Cape a globally significant AI Hub

WCAIC will be a collaborative multi-stakeholder vehicle geared to identify and achieve common objectives in a coherent manner and to help promote, co-ordinate and share opportunities that will result in jobs, FDI and regional growth as well as presenting the Western Cape as a globally significant AI Tech Hub and gateway to AI in the wider Africa region.

WCAIC will broadly follow the key tenants of the globally recognised Tech Cluster Model to research, create and orchestrate a robust AI ecosystem. This initiative is part of the province’s broader ambition to strengthen AI innovation, foster wider collaboration and unlock investment opportunities across key tech sub-sectors like AI.
